How to register a domain name

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

It is fairly simple to register a domain name. You will need a few things:

  • A Domain Registrar
  • A Domain Name
  • A Credit Card
  • Hosting for the Domain Name

The Domain registrar is where you setup your domain. It is the starting point when someone is trying to get to your site. I recommend 2 different places to register your domains.

www.godaddy.com

Use Go Daddy if there is absolutely no chance that you will be associated with spam. You must be sure that you will not be sending any message thru an autoresponder to drive traffic to your site. If you are not sure then do not take the chance. They will shut down your site.

www.discountdomainregistry.com

I have used this registry for years and they are not as inexpensive as Go Daddy but they will not shut down your site if you are accused of spam. I am not recommending that you spam to drive traffic but do not take the chance to have advertising in place just to see your dollars wasted because you have no site up.

Selecting a Domain Name

Most people select a domain name because it is cute or clever but you should be selecting a domain name that people might actually search for.

Case in Point:

A web site that offers Mold Inspection and testing should have a domain name that has keywords in the name that people will be searching for. I was able to have a customer register www.moldinspectionandtesting.com. Mold, Mold Inspection and Mold Testing were 3 of the top 3 words searched for on this subject. Take your time and do your research before you register your site.

Credit Card

If you are on the Internet then you will need a credit card to register your site.

Web Site Hosting

Once you have a domain name you will need server space to host your site. There any many places to host your site. Make sure you find out what options you will need and then compare hosting services. www.buyleadsforless.com offers hosting for your web site.
